Under the company's breakfast meeting at ONS in Stavanger CEO Erik Haugane (picture) confronted the media's coverage of the oil industry. Haugane believe the oil industry's silence has allowed the environmentalists and activists to dominate the public debate in Norway - and that this is tabloid and not based on facts.

- We have every reason to be proud of the Norwegian oil and gas industry. Our industry is the most important for creating prosperity and development both in Norway and in the world.

Haugane also pointed out that oil companies' task is to produce energy in a safe and effective way.

"It is not natural for oil companies to use their resources to develop alternative energy sources. It has never happened that the industry has promoted its own replacement", said Haugane, pointing out that it was not horse owners who developed the car, or telephone companies that invented the mobile phone.

"We will of course ensure that all energy will be utilized in the most effective way. More efficient use of energy is as important as new production"

Haugane criticize the horror propaganda that gets media’s attention and then forms the political debate. Recent examples are the long-term impact of accidents like the one in the Gulf of Mexico and of climate change.

- Much of it is nonsense. It is time that we confound many people's perception of the facts. The oil industry is important, and will remain so into the next century. Today we have no realistic alternatives to oil and gas. We should be proud of the contribution we make, to something the whole world still needs.
