Pertra AS was established by Petroleum
Geo-Services (PGS) ASA in 2001 as a wholly-owned E&P company to pursue
small-field opportunities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The potential synergies between Pertra and PGS' production services were a driver in PGS' engagement. Pertra was accepted as license holder and operator on the Norwegian Shelf in February 2002, and became the first Norwegian company operating on the Norwegian Shelf in more than 10 years. Following the purchase of the interests of Statoil and Norsk Hydro in Production License 038, Pertra took over as operator of the license on 1 August 2002, the producing Varg Field included. Toward the end of 2004, PGS ASA decided to sell Pertra and withdraw from the E&P business. Effective as of 1 January 2005 the entire company, all production licenses included, was sold to the Canadian company Talisman Energy. However, the management in Pertra established a new company, Pertra Management, and negotiated an agreement with Talisman Energy to purchase some of the assets that Talisman Energy had purchased from the previous owner. As a result of this, the foundation for establishing a new E&P company in Trondheim was in place. The new company resumed the name "Pertra". In February 2006, Pertra AS was converted into a public limited company, Pertra ASA. To finance this transaction and support future growth, capital was raised through Petro Midt-Norge AS. Through the agreement with Talisman, the new company was able to employ most of the staff from the "old Pertra", and has even strengthened the manning in some areas, as the new company is more exploration-focused than the former one. On 9 October 2007, the Boards of Pertra ASA and DNO resolved to execute a combination of Pertra and DNO's Norwegian operations, organized as the company NOIL Energy. DNO changed its company name to DNO International. The combination was resolved in Extraordinary General Meetings in DNO and Pertra held 8 November 2007. Effective as of 19 November 2007, the new company name of Pertra was "Det norske oljeselskap ", commonly known as "Det norske". NOIL Energy was formally merged into Det norske in 2008. The identity as a new oil company, Det norske, was emphasized by the introduction of a new logo and graphic design in 2008.
